These snapshots are my love letter to DC, my home, and homage to masters of a different era. Joel Meyerowitz, a classic street photographer, said he liked to take “tough photos”: “Tough to like, tough to see, tough to make, tough to understand. The tougher they were the more beautiful they became.” I’m honestly not sure if these photos achieve this, but I wanted to create a series that were “ tough,” that came from the gut. In doing so I hope to show that DC is not just a place where movers and shakers climb political ladders. It’s also a place where people live, different cultures intersect, and micro issues persist citywide in the shadows of a federal agenda.
